In the summer of 1969, the world watched the unfolding drama of the Apollo 11 Space Mission in which American astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin successfully landed on the moon’s surface and returned safely to Earth 8 days later. Most of us who witnessed this momentous event through television remember what a proud day it was for our nation to successfully achieve a national goal set by our late President, John F. Kennedy, in a speech to the U.S. Congress on May 25, 1961.
Throughout the past 43 years, our space program has prompted and facilitated the development of scientific innovations and technologies that have improved the quality of our lives, including the miniaturized integrated circuit, satellite technology, GPS navigation systems, and numerous others.
However, despite all their efforts and research, the scientific community has yet to find any solid evidence for the existence of extra-terrestrial life or any other planet even capable of supporting or sustaining life as we know it. For the Christian, this should come as no surprise as scripture tells us that planet earth was uniquely and strategically designed by our Creator-God to support and sustain His creation:
“So God created great sea creatures and every living thing….Then God said let us make human beings in Our image.”—Genesis 1: 21, 26 (NLT)
Therefore, we have no need to wonder about the origin of life or worry about our future existence. The same powerful God who spoke the universe into existence and created all that is around us can be trusted completely to sustain and support us throughout this mission called Life.
