Whatever happens with the budget fights and the debt limit, the American public ought to know the facts about how we got here. The seeds for crisis were sown in three developments during the Clinton era. The problem grew steadily during the Bush years. Still, only the radical policies of the past three years, using the excuse of an over-hyped financial crisis, forced the federal Treasury into such dire straits.

Imagine a nurse, of left-wing political beliefs, working at the health clinic of a state university. Imagine that if state law requires that for any patient/student found to be pregnant, the clinic must provide the patient a set of written materials on pregnancy that includes non-coercive information on fetal pain and on alternatives to abortion. The nurse, an active member of NARAL Pro-Choice America, says she has a personal, moral objection against distributing such materials and asks merely that another nurse be assigned to that specific task when such an occasion arises.

Nobody knows who insisted that the Declaration of Independence acknowledge the Creator's authorship of rights with which men are endowed, but we do know that such an understanding of the Creator's role was central to the American experience. In a time when presidents and TV networks, among others, repeatedly omit the Creator's role in the Declaration, the Pledge of Allegiance, and other civil rites, it is worth exploring the citation's origins and its relevance today.

He has been published professionally in well over 50 publications, including the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, and Investors Business Daily. He is a former editorial writer and columnist for the Washington Times and the Mobile Register. He has appeared dozens of times as a television analyst in Washington D.C., Alabama, Arkansas, and Louisiana, and as a guest hundreds of times on national and local radio shows.

Hillyer also has served for five years as press secretary for U.S. House Appropriations Committee Chairman Bob Livingston of New Orleans. He is a cum laude graduate of Georgetown University, and is a Fellow of the Loyola University (New Orleans) Institute of Politics and of Leadership Coastal Alabama.
